Posters have been a successful marketing tool for many, many years – but do we really know the best ways to create them and how to use them effectively?

Getting back to basics and asking those fundamental questions before you start creating your next poster is a brilliant way to ensure you do a thorough job.

What Is A Poster?

Everyone knows what a poster is… or do they? Posters are usually a piece of promotional printing that is created for one of four purposes: to promote a movie, as a piece of advertising for a product or service, to promote an event, or for a political purpose.

A poster should inform, entertain, and persuade so there are a lot of things to consider when creating your poster design.

Posters are usually used to promote something temporarily and are placed in a public place to gather as much attention from passing trade as possible.

Poster design & purpose

When considering your design you need to think about the key information that should be included. For example, an events poster will include the date, time, and venue of the event as well as the name of the event.

Your poster should capture the attention of the person who may be passing so think about including the following:

  • A clear and bold headline
  • Key information and key messages written simply
  • Use of colour
  • One specific prominently displayed image that represents your message well.

Don’t forget to consider any branding needs such as colour schemes and logos. When considering promotional printing you need to make sure that your audience understands who is actually informing them so that they can recognise your event, product, or service in any other marketing activities you may be undertaking.

Poster size

The size of your poster is often determined by where you wish to place the poster.

Smaller posters – usually A3 or A4 – are best placed in more confined spaces where people will be able to access a smaller font size and still be able to interpret your marketing.

Medium and Large posters – A2, A1, A0 or larger – are often better placed in more open locations – where people will be able to interpret your marketing from a distance.

It’s important to determine the type of locations you wish to advertise in before designing your poster as this will affect your overall design.

Poster printing

Once you have decided upon your location and design it’s time to get your poster printed and ordering online is quick and easy. If you are struggling to formulate your design, graphic design services are also available online and a designer will be able to make your poster look more professional if you are inexperienced at design.
